THE DIFFERENCE

WHY RESTRING?

____________

You've probably heard the saying "you should restring your racket as many times per year as you play per week." So, if you play three times a week, you should restring about three times per year. This is generally accepted as the rule and if you don't want to get too technically bogged down, then you could follow this thought process, and you'll be fine.

Instead of following the rule of thumb, here are some other clues that you can look out for, and that you should pay attention to, so you know when to get your racquet restrung:

THE APPEARANCE OF THE STRINGS

The easiest way to know when it's time to restring is by noticing how your strings look. If your strings are fraying or look washed out, or the strings are moving frequently, reducing the amount of spin and power you can put on the ball, it's definitely time to restring.

THE SOUND THE STRINGS MAKE WHEN YOU HIT THE BALL

If you notice that the strings sound dead, or the pitch of the 'ping' is more 'pong', it may be time to restring. When strings wear out, they will not be as lively, and you may first notice this in a change of sound on your strokes.

THE FEEL WHEN YOU HIT THE BALL

As your strings lose their liveliness, you may experience a dull or dead feeling when you hit the ball. The ball just does not come off your racquet the way it used to, especially on your groundstrokes. You might feel like you need to hit the ball harder just to make it go the same distance it used to.

THE LENGTH OF TIME SINCE YOU LAST HAD A RESTRING

You might feel that you need to restring just because it's been so long since your racquet has had new strings. This could be the case with a racket that you haven't played with for some time. While the strings on that racket may look fine, you'll get so much benefit out of new, lively strings that it could make a big difference.
